An action survival-horror movie headlined by Idris Elba is making its way to Netflix soon. At the time of its release, it received a generally positive reception from critics and audiences. However, it performed modestly at the box office.

These include the Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement for Character Animation in a Live Action Production and the Visual Effects Society Award for Outstanding Animated Character in a Photoreal Feature.

Beast starts streaming on Netflix in April

Netflix has reportedly set the streaming release date for Idris Elba’s Beast to April 7, 2026. The film, co-starring Sharlto Copley, drops alongside the original documentary, Untold: Chess Mates.

At the time of its theatrical release, the movie grossed only an estimated $59 million at the box office against its $36 million budget.

Set against the backdrop of the Mopani Reserve in South Africa, the story follows a widowed father, Dr. Nate Samuels, and his two teenage daughters, who travel to the location, managed by a biologist and Nate’s friend, Martin Battles, for a vacation and to reconnect following a period of estrangement. Unfortunately, their peaceful trip is threatened by a rogue man-eating lion, who stalks and attacks the trio, throwing them into a tight struggle for survival.

The film has performed reasonably well on Rotten Tomatoes, holding a fresh 68% critical score and a robust 77% audience score. However, it has garnered “mixed to average” reception on Metacritic, displaying a Metascore and user score of 54 and 4.9, respectively.

Baltasar Kormákur, whose credits include 101 Reykjavik, The Sea, A Little Trip to Heaven, Contraband, 2 Guns, Everest, and Touch, directed the movie. He also co-produced it with James Lopez and Will Packer. Meanwhile, Ryan Engle worked on the screenplay while Jaime Primak Sullivan wrote the story.

Elba headlines the film as Dr. Nate Samuels. The supporting actors include Sharlto Copley as Martin Battles, Leah Sava Jeffries as Norah Samuels, and Iyana Halley as Meredith Samuels. Rounding out the cast are Naledi Mogadime, Tafara Nyatsansa, Martin Munro, and Ronald McWanazi.
