The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil Finds Director for Korean Action Movie Remake
James Wan is officially stepping back into the world of action, and has joined the upcoming reimagining of the Korean movie The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil for Paramount Pictures.
What do we know about The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil remake?
Wan, who is best known for directing projects like Saw, The Conjuring, and Furious 7, will direct and produce the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Don Lee, also known as Ma Dong-seok and one of the stars of the original movie, is also attached to the project, and set to star in the reimagining.
Shay Hatten (John Wick, Rebel Moon) is set to write the screenplay for the movie, based on a draft by Brian Helgeland. Currently, no other casting information is available as of yet, and it’s also unclear how different this film will be from the original.
Originally released in 2019, The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil follows the story of a gangster and a cop who are forced to join forces in order to catch a serial killer, but face obstacles in the form of one another’s own respective enemies. The movie was written and directed by Lee Won-tae, and starred Ma Dong-seok in the role of the gangster, Kim Mu-yeol as the police officer, and Kim Sung-kyu as the serial killer.
The original movie was received extremely well, and holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Particularly, the cast and Lee himself are praised for their performances.
For Wan, this would be his latest movie since 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. While he’s had several producer credits since then as a founder of the production company Atomic Monster, he’s been away from the director’s chair for three years.
