White Lotus Star’s A24 Podcast Horror Movie Gets Scary Good RT Score

Adam DiMarco and Nina Kiri’s new A24 podcast-horror movie, Undertone, has garnered mostly favorable reviews from professional critics, leading to a high score on Rotten Tomatoes (RT). The film had its world premiere at the 29th Fantasia International Film Festival on July 27, 2025. The Movie will release in the US this Friday.

What critics are saying about Undertone in reviews

Helmed and written by Ian Tuason, the horror film follows a paranormal podcast host whose life takes a scary turn when she receives recordings from a couple expecting a baby. Overall, the critical response to Undertone has been largely positive.

Zachary Lee of MovieWeb observed, “It’s a film that turns your creativity and imagination against you; one of those rare horror films that you don’t passively watch but actively experience. Tuason and his crew know that whatever you can imagine is probably scarier than anything that’s explicitly put on screen.”

Meanwhile, Alan French of FandomWire noted that Undertone is “a thrilling experience,” adding that the movie “pushes the limits of sound design in the genre. Combined with intriguing Catholic themes and good performances, the horror film will stick with you.”

Bloody Disgusting’s Joe Lipsett further called the movie a “near-perfect aural horror experience.” Lipsett elaborated, “There’s no denying the film’s visceral impact right up until the final frame. I can’t remember the last time a movie made every hair on my body stand up, but The Undertone got me good.”

Additionally, TheWrap’s Chase Hutchinson wrote that Undertone “captures not just the evil that may lurk within them, but wields a sonic power that, for the brave, is one you’ll want to listen back to.”

Katie Rife of AV Club also gave the movie a glowing review, hailing it as the “perfect horror film for our era,” in which superstition and technology “feed one another.”

Undertone gets a strong score on Rotten Tomatoes

Undertone currently has an 88% Tomatometer rating on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes after 40 reviews. This number will probably change as the movie releases and more outlets publish their reviews.

However, it is safe to presume that Undertone will remain a favorably-rated feature, and will likely garner an equally impressive Popcornmeter score from the audience.
