Son of Star Trek Creator Promises Things Will Get Better With New Regime
The son of the Star Trek creator believes the franchise could enter a stronger era under Paramount’s new leadership. After the company’s major merger with Skydance Media, he says the shift could bring meaningful change to the franchise.
Rod Roddenberry says Paramount’s new owners will make Star Trek better
In August 2025, Paramount went through a major corporate shift after merging with Skydance Media. The deal formed a new company, Paramount Skydance Corporation, with David Ellison taking charge as chairman and CEO. The move quickly raised questions about the future of one of the studio’s biggest franchises, Star Trek.
Those questions surfaced again at the Saturn Awards in 2026, where Star Trek: Strange New Worlds earned a nomination for Best Science Fiction Television Series. On the red carpet, producers Trevor Roth and Rod Roddenberry discussed the leadership change and what it could mean for the franchise moving forward.
In an interview with The Direct, Trevor Roth said the creative team wants the new executives to truly get what makes Star Trek stand out. He explained that the franchise is not just about flashy sci-fi action or pure entertainment. It also opens the door to bigger conversations about real-world issues.
Roth noted that the heart of Star Trek lies in storytelling that entertains while also tackling meaningful themes that matter today. He also shared a positive early impression of the new leadership. From what the team has seen so far, Roth said the executives seem to understand and respect that unique value.
Rod Roddenberry shared a similar upbeat view about the future of Star Trek. He suggested the leadership shake-up could actually push the franchise in a better direction. Roddenberry made it clear he is not criticizing the previous setup. In his view, things were not bad before the merger.
Still, he believes fresh leadership can bring positive momentum. “I’m a big fan of change, maybe not change just for the sake of change, but, dare I say, sometimes disruptive change for the better. I do think with the new regime, things will get better,” Roddenberry said.
