3rd Movie in Beloved $1.3B Pixar Franchise in Works at Disney

Pixar is reportedly heading back to Monstropolis. The animation giant has confirmed development on a third movie in the franchise, sending waves of excitement through the Pixar fandom.

Monsters Inc. 3 in development

According to the Wall Street Journal, Disney and Pixar are developing Monsters Inc. 3, bringing the beloved monster world back to the big screen. The project surfaced in the outlet’s profile that explored the internal workings of Pixar as the studio prepared to release its latest film, Hoppers.

The franchise has proven to be a colossal earner for Disney. The original 2001 movie, directed by now-Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter, grossed $528.7 million worldwide. Its 2013 prequel, Monsters University, helmed by Dan Scanlon, outperformed the original with a staggering $743.5 million global tally, bringing the franchise’s total box office haul past $1.3 billion.

That massive success spawned the Disney+ sequel series Monsters at Work, which ran for two seasons and expanded the universe beyond the scare floor. Now, it’s not immediately clear who will direct Monsters Inc. 3. Story details also remain under wraps, including whether the project will function as a sequel to the original or another prequel. The first film’s core concept centered on monsters harnessing screams for energy, though that dynamic evolved by the end of the story.

The original voice cast remains a major selling point. John Goodman (Sulley) and Billy Crystal (Mike) are synonymous with their roles, and Disney has not officially confirmed their involvement in the Monsters Inc. 3rd movie. Their comedic chemistry anchored both previous films and the subsequent series.

However, Pixar isn’t stopping with the Monsters movie. The studio has a packed slate of legacy sequels in the pipeline. June will see Toy Story 5, which pits Buzz and a balding Woody against smart tablets. The Incredibles 3 is dated for 2028, with Elemental’s Peter Sohn at the helm. Additionally, a second Coco movie is expected in 2029.

Between these heavy hitters, Pixar is taking creative swings on original stories, so fans gotta wait on Monsters Inc. 3 official confirmation.
