The Housemaid 2: Sequel to Sydney Sweeney’s Erotic Thriller Gets Major Update

The next chapter of The Housemaid franchise is beginning to take shape. Producer Todd Lieberman recently offered a brief update on the sequel to the Sydney Sweeney-led thriller as development on the follow-up moves forward.

In an interview with TheWrap, Todd Lieberman shared an update on the planned sequel to The Housemaid while discussing the film’s theatrical success.

The Lionsgate thriller featuring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried and directed by Paul Feig opened at number one in December 2025 and earned about $388.9 million worldwide against a reported $35 million to $60 million budget. Lieberman said the sequel script is already underway and generating industry interest.

Hidden Pictures, Lieberman’s production company, developed the project internally after acquiring Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel. He recalled reading the book quickly after colleagues urged him to look at it during a retreat. “I didn’t see any of the twists and turns coming.”

According to Lieberman, the team originally focused on making the first film work rather than planning a franchise. “I’m wildly superstitious about talking about a sequel before the first one even comes out,” he said. The producers had already optioned three novels in McFadden’s series when development began.

During post-production discussions, Feig and his producing partner suggested preparing for another installment if the first movie performed well. Lieberman said he eventually approved starting work on the next script before the film reached theaters. “So we started writing the sequel before the first one even came out.”

Lieberman declined to reveal detailed plot or production information but confirmed momentum around the project. “I can’t really talk about where we are now, but I will say this: the script is excellent, and there’s a lot of excitement around it.” The sequel will adapt McFadden’s follow-up novel, The Housemaid’s Secret, and could begin production in 2026.
