New Lord of the Rings Movie Gets Huge Casting & Potential Story Update

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum has received a big casting update.

In 2024, it was announced that Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s Andy Serkis was directing a new Middle-earth movie that is currently titled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Serkis, who played Gollum/Sméagol in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the first Hobbit movie, is also reprising his role in the new film.

What is the update on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum?

While much of the casting for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum remains up in the air at this time, a new report from Knight Edge Media provides a substantial update on the project.

The outlet reports that casting is currently underway for two female characters in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The character descriptions read “30s, female, white, lead role” and “50s, female, white, supporting role,” with no other details provided.

However, Knight Edge Media also reports that this casting call is “not for any possible returning actresses that could appear, such as Cate Blanchett as Lady Galadriel or Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel. This casting call also confirmed that a new 30-year-old actor would be auditioning for the role of Aragorn/Strider, rather than Viggo Mortensen returning.”

The article says that the two female characters could potentially be a younger version of Arwen, Sméagol’s grandmother, or Aragorn’s mother, though none of this has been confirmed and is all just speculation at this time.

Production on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum — which is being produced by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens — is expected to begin later this year. The movie currently has a December 17, 2027, release date from Warner Bros. Pictures.
