Robert Downey Jr. officially christened the new cruise ship Disney Adventure during a special ceremony held onboard in Singapore on March 4. The actor attended the event after previously being announced as the vessel’s official godparent ahead of its maiden voyage scheduled for March 10.
Downey opened the event with a playful remark to the audience. He said, “Well, never let it be said I don’t know how to make an entrance,” as guests greeted him with applause. He also reflected on the creative team behind the vessel. The veteran actor noted that he had spent time with the designers at Walt Disney Imagineering. Praising their work, he said, “I’ve had the privilege of getting to know the team at Walt Disney Imagineering. I can tell you ‘Adventure’ is the perfect name for what they’ve created.”
The actor also commented on the scale and attractions of the ship. He described it as enormous and filled with entertainment options for passengers. “I mean it’s absolutely massive, it’s gargantuan. Have you been up top? Cos there’s an entire amusement park up there. It’s bananas! I recommend the Ironcycle coaster by the way… I’ve got a good feeling about that one,” he said before formally carrying out the christening.
Downey then delivered the ceremonial blessing, declaring, “I christen thee ‘Disney Adventure’. May God bless this ship and all who sail upon us.” Earlier in the week, the arrival of the cruise ship at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore was marked with a large fireworks display.
The ceremony was held inside the Walt Disney Theatre and featured musical performances accompanied by a 23-piece orchestra. Singers Jed Madela and Dami Im also performed during the event. Appearances by Disney characters Captain Mickey and Captain Minnie also took place.
