Chris Miller reveals that there isn’t any green screen shot in Project Hail Mary
While speaking with ComicBook.com, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller revealed that Project Hail Mary was filmed without green or blue screen shots. Miller said, “There is no green screen in the movie whatsoever. Not a single green or blue screen was used.” The filmmakers instead relied on constructed sets and physical elements during the production of the film overall.
Lord highlighted the character Rocky as a central technical achievement in the film’s effects process. He said, “I think the singular achievement has to be Rocky.” Lord explained that the team developed the character from early design stages, physically printed and painted models, and later enhanced them with work from CG artists and animators across multiple production teams and departments.
Chris Miller described the scale of the physical production, saying, “The whole ship was built as a set from the inside. We had a huge section of the exterior of the ship on the outside that we built.” These sets allowed performers and crew to interact with tangible environments on set.
Miller also explained that Rocky was physically present during filming. He said, “Rocky was really with us at all times,” adding that practical lighting used by cinematographer Greig Fraser’s team allowed the camera to move freely and capture reactions between Rocky and Ryan Gosling’s character Ryland Grace as scenes unfolded during filming on the production set itself daily.
Although the production avoided green and blue screens, the filmmakers still incorporated digital effects into the movie. Lord credited the visual effects artists who expanded Rocky’s performance after the team captured the practical elements during filming. Ryan Gosling-led Project Hail Mary will be released in theaters on March 20.
