National Treasure 3 Gets Surprising Update After Nicolas Cage Said No to It
A new update has emerged regarding the long-awaited third installment in the National Treasure franchise. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently shared the latest status of the project following years of uncertainty surrounding the sequel’s development.
National Treasure 3 is ‘coming along quite well’
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said that National Treasure 3 is progressing and that work on the film is underway. Speaking on the red carpet at the Producers Guild Awards, Bruckheimer told The Direct that the sequel is “coming along quite well.” He also confirmed that the creative team is currently “working on the script for it.”
The National Treasure franchise began in the 2000s with two Disney action adventure films starring Nicolas Cage as treasure hunter Ben Gates. Disney released National Treasure Book of Secrets in 2007, making it the most recent theatrical installment in the franchise. Since the film’s commercial performance, discussions about producing a third installment have continued for years.
In May 2024, Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that Ted Elliott joined the project to write the script for National Treasure 3. Elliott also wrote multiple Pirates of the Caribbean films and was developing both projects at the time. Despite that announcement, the production team has not moved the sequel into production.
In late 2025, Bruckheimer told The Wrap that “we’re getting closer” to moving the film forward. He also said Nicolas Cage would reprise Ben Gates, with Jon Turteltaub returning as director. However, the studio has not announced a production schedule or release date.
Rumors about a third installment began circulating shortly after the 2007 release of Book of Secrets. Disney later expanded the franchise with the streaming series National Treasure Edge of History, which premiered in 2022 before Disney canceled the show after one season.Actor Nicolas Cage told Screen Rant in 2024 that “there is no National Treasure 3.” Bruckheimer’s recent comments indicate that development discussions and script work on the project are continuing currently.
