The Mummy 4’s Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weisz Returned on 1 Condition

Universal’s next chapter in The Mummy franchise comes with a major reunion. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as Radio Silence, brought Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz back, but seemingly after one key factor fell into place.

The Mummy 4 directors on how Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz reunited

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett said bringing back Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz felt almost unreal. In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Gillett called it a “dream project.” He described the project as beautiful, scary, and epic in scale while promoting Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.

The duo credited their longtime collaborator William Sherrick for championing the idea during work on Abigail. At first, they did not think it would actually happen. Then meetings with writer Dave Coggeshall took place, and the pitch started to gain momentum.

The original Mummy movie introduced Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell and Weisz as Evelyn Carnahan. It led to The Mummy Returns and later The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Weisz did not appear in the third film, where Maria Bello stepped in as Evelyn.

Bettinelli-Olpin made it clear that it was the script that sealed the deal. “I don’t think Brendan and Rachel are getting involved unless they love that script,” he said, adding, “And what they read, I think they really liked.” He described the screenplay as full of heart and strong character work.

The directors also acknowledged the franchise’s cultural impact, including memes that dubbed the 1999 film a “bisexual awakening” for many fans. Gillett recalled a nurse telling him the movie had that effect on her. “She was like, ‘That movie, it was like an awakening for me,’“ Gillett remembered. He also said the team feels humbled to continue a franchise that blended kindness, humor, and spectacle so effectively.
