Jake Gyllenhaal Gives Unsurprising Reply on Mysterio’s Return

Jake Gyllenhaal recently spoke about whether he would be open to returning as his Spider-Man: Far From Home character, Mysterio, in the MCU. Gyllenhaal was cast as the Spider-Man villain opposite Tom Holland in May 2018, and the film was released the following year in the wake of the massive success of Avengers: Endgame. The actor will next be seen in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming gothic horror movie, The Bride!

Jake Gyllenhaal on Mysterio’s return possibility

Jake Gyllenhaal recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight and was asked what he’d like to see for the character of Mysterio if a version of him came back into the MCU’s multiverse.

In his response to the question, the actor conveyed that he was not in the loop about whether a version of the character was being considered for a return by Marvel and simply said, “Oh man, I’m…I’m not the one to ask about that.”

There has been some uncertainty and speculation from fans surrounding the ultimate fate of Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home. At the end of the movie, Mysterio is seen being shot by a misfiring drone. However, in a shocking moment, the post-credits show him exposing Spider-Man’s real identity to the world from beyond the grave. Producer Amy Pascal was asked in July 2019 whether Mysterio is dead. She told Comicbook.com, “You don’t know.” This led many fans to take over social media and indulge in discussions surrounding Mysterio’s future.

According to ComicBook Resources, in 2022, Spider-Man: No Way Home co-writer Chris McKenna discussed the concept art of Mysterio fighting Doctor Strange. Although the concept art wasn’t used in the movie, McKenna asserted that with the introduction of the multiverse into the MCU, “you get a lot of conversations.” He added that they had to use characters that “don’t overwhelm the story and Peter himself.”
