Brenda Song recently spoke to E! News’ The Rundown about how she and her fiancé, Macaulay Culkin, recently showed their sons Dakota and Carson Culkin’s 1990 classic, Home Alone. The couple turned the film into a lesson for their kids, making them wary of strangers.
“They love all the hijinks and the traps and stuff,” Song said, explaining how the kids reacted to the movie, “They have no real concept [of the danger]. My oldest gets it more than my younger son.”
But Song also used the movie to grab a favorable stance with her children. “I remember at the end going, ‘See, your mama’s here right next to you. Don’t you want to give me a hug? I didn’t leave,’” she explained. “I’m so terrible, but I feel like your children have to be a little scared. Fear goes a long way.”
Song has been actively teaching her kids the concept of “stranger danger.” She elaborated, “I said, ‘They’re a stranger if you don’t know their name,’…I was like, ‘It doesn’t matter if they’re someone’s parents. If you don’t know their name, or you’ve never seen them before at our house, they are a stranger.’”
She added that she uses every small opportunity to help build her kids’ awareness and safety skills. “Everywhere we go, I’m like, ‘How do we get home?’” she elaborated, “Every building we go in, like, ‘How did we get here? How do we get out?’ I was teaching them exit signs.”
Adding about Culkin’s reaction to this, Song said, “My partner thinks I’m absolutely crazy about it.”
