Spider-Man: Sony’s Shared Universe Will Be Getting a Reboot
One of Spider-Man’s strangest movie franchises is apparently getting a reboot.
In 2018, Sony Pictures released Ruben Fleischer’s Venom starring Tom Hardy, which then kicked off Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. While there are some references and connectivity to the MCU Tom Holland franchise, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe doesn’t actually feature Spider-Man; rather, it centers around other supporting characters from Spider-Man comics.
Other entries in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe include 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, 2022’s Morbius, 2024’s Madame Web, 2024’s Venom: The Last Dance, and 2024’s Kraven the Hunter.
Following the release of Kraven the Hunter, it seemed that Sony had no plans to make any more movies that are part of this shared universe; however, according to CEO Tom Rothman, there may be a reboot coming at some point.
What do we know about the Spider-Man reboot?
In a recent episode of The Town with Matt Belloni, Rothman answered “no” when asked if the larger Spider-Verse cinematic franchise — not just the animated Spider-Verse movies, but any live-action projects related to Spider-Man — was dead.
He then confirmed that Sony had plans to “go back to those” at some point. When asked if this will be a “fresh reboot” with “new people,” Rothman said “yes.”
No further details beyond that were offered, meaning it’s unclear what this rebooted franchise will look like or when fans should expect it to arrive. It’s possible that Rothman just means that the company will make some stand-alone moves based on Marvel Spider-Man characters in the future; however, if it is truly a reboot and a new cinematic universe is being formed, that means the post-credit scene cliffhanger featured in Venom: The Last Dance that sees Andy Serkis playing Knull will likely go unresolved forever.
Having said that, the news may not be all that surprising, as Sony has to keep making movie related to Spider-Man in order to retain the rights to the character. Many of the entries in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe bombed at the box office and/or received poor reviews, meaning a reboot may indeed be in the studio’s best interest.
