What happens in the Backrooms teaser trailer?
The trailer for Backrooms previews a terrifying horror movie about a mysterious dimension that appears to be nothing but unending, workplace-like rooms, though there may be some horrors that lie deep within them. The movie stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is known for his Oscar-nominated performance in 2013’s 12 Years a Slave and for playing Karl Mordo in the MCU.
The Backrooms originated as a 4chan creepypasta thread. The concept is that there are “wrong areas” of reality, also known as the Backrooms, that people can suddenly find themselves trapped in. These areas are typically portrayed as endless carpeted and monotoned rooms lit with fluorescent lights that emit a buzzing white noise effect. People can get lost in the Backrooms for long periods of time; however, there are also monsters that inhabit the liminal space.
The concept of the Backrooms quickly took off on Reddit following the initial thread. In 2022, Parsons started a series of Backrooms short films on YouTube, which then went viral and largely brought the concept into the mainstream. Severance creator Dan Erickson said that The Backrooms were one of his many inspirations when working on the Apple TV+ show.
In addition to Ejiofor, the cast of Backrooms includes Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lucite Maxwell, and Avan Jogia. The script comes from Will Soodik and Roberto Patino, while James Wan and Michael Clear are producing for Wan’s Atomic Monster.
Backrooms will be released in United States theaters on May 29, 2026, by A24.
