He recently appeared in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, which was released last year, and will soon be heard reprising his voice role as Sheriff Woody in Toy Story 5.

What do we know about the Tom Hanks Abraham Lincoln movie?

Per Deadline, Hanks has now been cast to play Abraham Lincoln in a live-action stop-motion animation hybrid movie titled Lincoln in the Bardo. Hanks will play a live-action version of Lincoln.

The film is based on a 2017 novel written by George Saunders. Duke Johnson, who co-directed 2015’s Anomalisa with Charlie Kaufman, is the director. Johnson also made a 2025 movie called The Actor.

Deadline’s description of the plot reads, “Lincoln in the Bardo will employ a unique blend of stop-motion animation and live action to explore one of the most intimate moments of Lincoln’s life, centering on his relationship with his recently deceased 11-year-old son.  The movie will explore themes of love, empathy, and human capacity in the face of grief as the story unfolds through an ensemble of characters, both living and dead, historical and invented.”

The movie comes from Starburns Industries, with production expected to take place in London. Hanks and Gary Goetzman will produce Lincoln in the Bardo for Hanks’ Playtone label, while Johnson, Paul Young, and Devon Young Rabinowitz are producing for Starubrns Industries. Steven Shareshian, Aaron Mitchell, and Saunders serve as executive producers.

An official release date for Lincoln in the Bardo has not yet been announced.
