Mamma Mia 3 Gets Huge Update, Surprising Cast Return Teased
The potential Mamma Mia 3 got a big update today, including whether or not fans could expect a major return should the movie happen.
What is the latest Mamma Mia 3 update?
Speaking during the BAFTA Film Awards that took place over the weekend, NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Dame Donna Langley was asked about a third film in the franchise. Surprisingly, Langley confirmed that a Mamma Mia 3 was definitely going to happen, and even teased the possible return of Meryl Streep’s character.
“Yes, I’m going to say right now that there will be a Mamma Mia 3,” Langley said. When asked about Streep’s return for the role, Langley simply said that “If Meryl Streep would like to come back, we’ll find a way to bring her back.”
Mamma Mia began as a 1999 musical of the same name by playwright Catherine Johnson and follows the story of a young bride-to-be who invites three men to her upcoming wedding, all of which could be her real father. The musical is set to the music of Swedish group ABBA and named after their 1975 hit song as well.
In 2008, the first film based on the movie was released. It starred Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper, Amanda Seyfried, and Christine Baranski. A second film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, was released in 2018 and featured most of the original cast returning. That film was both a prequel and a sequel and followed the story after the original movie, as well as showing some of Donna’s (Mery Streep/Lily James) history.
In total, the two Mamma Mia films grossed over $1 billion at the box office, so it isn’t surprising to see a third one coming. It’s unclear if the majority of the main cast will be returning or who would be directing or writing the movie as of now.
