Talking about the project, Lee suggested that the filmmakers are not looking to significantly alter the story. However, the film will introduce a few new additions.
Live-action How To Train Your Dragon 2 ‘will have some new things’
Executive producer Roy Lee has shared an early update on the direction of the How To Train Your Dragon 2. He indicated that the film will stay largely faithful to what audiences have already seen while still introducing a few additions.
Speaking about the project to Screen Rant, Lee avoided revealing major details. However, he stressed that the creative team is not looking to drastically alter what already works, saying they wouldn’t “mess with what’s working.” At the same time, he acknowledged that the next installment “will have some new things.” But he avoided revealing specific plot details and said he “wouldn’t want to spoil anything.”
The film will function both as a continuation of the 2025 live-action remake and as a new adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon 2. Franchise filmmaker Dean DeBlois is returning to write and direct the project, continuing his long association with the series. Casting updates have also been confirmed. Cate Blanchett will reprise the role of Hiccup’s mother, Valka. The film will also introduce key antagonists from the story, with Ólafur Darri Ólafsson cast as Drago and Phil Dunster set to portray Eret.
When the first live-action film was being developed, DeBlois repeatedly said he planned to stay close to the animated version How to Train Your Dragon, even recreating several well-known scenes. Still, the remake introduced certain changes. One of the most discussed decisions was casting Nico Parker as Astrid. The filmmaker defended this by pointing to Parker’s performance and emphasizing that the story exists in a fantasy world.
The 2025 film also made smaller adjustments to the story, including additional action for Astrid and expanded references to Valka.
