Nicole Kidman & Ewan McGregor’s Iconic Movie To Leave Netflix in Weeks

A 2001 period drama starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor is set to leave Netflix’s content library soon. Set in the late 1800s, it follows a young writer’s passionate and secret affair with a cabaret’s star courtesan.

Moulin Rouge! leaves Netflix in March

Moulin Rouge! is scheduled to leave Netflix on Friday, March 13, 2026.

Released on June 1, 2001, Baz Luhrmann directed the movie with a script he co-wrote with Craig Pearce. It served as the final part of Luhrmann’s Red Curtain Trilogy, which previously included Strictly Ballroom (1992) and Romeo + Juliet (1996).

The movie stars Nicole Kidman as Satine, Ewan McGregor as Christian, Jim Broadbent as Harold Zidler, Richard Roxburgh as The Duke of Monroth, and John Leguizamo as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, among others.

Set in Paris in 1899, the story centers on Christian, an English writer who arrives in Montmartre seeking inspiration. His bohemian friend Henri later introduces him to Satine, the star performer and courtesan at Moulin Rouge, to help create a new show for the nightclub. However, Christian and Satine fall in love away from the prying eyes of others.

Meanwhile, the cabaret’s owner, Harold, seeks funds from a wealthy duke. As Christian and Satine continue to grow closer, the duke gets jealous and wants Satine for himself.

Moulin Rouge! is a jukebox musical incorporating more than 40 popular songs from the mid- to late-20th century and extravagant sets to explore Christian and Satine’s beautiful love story. It reportedly took the studio over two years just to acquire the license for all the songs.

Upon its release, the movie received a favorable reception from both audiences and critics. It currently has 75% Tomatometer score and 89% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. Furthermore, it earned over $179 million globally against a $50 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). It also won Oscars for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Costume Design.
