The Mummy 2 Returns to Theaters for 25th Anniversary, Gets Poster, Teaser & Date
More than two decades after it first stormed theaters, The Mummy Returns is heading back to the big screen. Universal has officially revealed the rerelease date of The Mummy Returns, celebrating the film’s milestone anniversary with a brand-new poster and teaser trailer. Fans will soon get the chance to relive the action-packed fantasy sequel in theaters once again.
The Mummy Returns is back in theaters in March
The Mummy Returns rerelease date is officially March 27 as part of its 25th anniversary celebration. The limited theatrical run is expected to last at least a week, though early demand suggests tickets may sell out quickly. Universal also debuted a new trailer to celebrate the occasion, reigniting excitement for one of the early 2000s’ biggest blockbusters.
The sequel followed the massive success of 1999’s The Mummy, which saw Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz lead a swashbuckling supernatural adventure. In fact, it grossed over $415 million worldwide against an $80 million budget.
Building on that momentum, The Mummy Returns expanded the franchise’s mythology and introduced Dwayne Johnson as The Scorpion King. It was one of his earliest film roles after transitioning from professional wrestling to acting. Upon its original release, the sequel earned an impressive $443 million globally. With the anniversary screenings, the film could surpass the $450 million mark in total box office revenue.
The broader Mummy franchise continued beyond the 2001 sequel. Fraser later returned for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008, while a separate reboot starring Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe arrived years later. However, the original Fraser-led installments remain fan favorites.
Now, excitement doesn’t stop with the anniversary rerelease. It has already been confirmed that Fraser and Weisz will reunite for another Mummy movie, currently reportedly scheduled for release on May 19, 2028. While plot details and additional casting remain under wraps, with the re-release of The Mummy Returns and another one in the works, fans are excited.
