Chris Hemsworth Explains What Went Wrong With MCU’s Thor 4 Movie

Chris Hemsworth has addressed some of the negative reactions that Thor 4 received.

Marvel Studios’ Thor 4, also known as Thor: Love and Thunder, was released in 2022. Directed by Taika Waititi, the comedic superhero movie sees Hemsworth reprise his Thor character, while the cast also includes Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Russell Crowe as Zeus.

Thor: Love and Thunder received mixed reviews from fans and critics. It currently has a 63 percent Tomatometer score and 76 percent Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes, with this being on the lower side when it comes to MCU movies. It grossed around $760.9 million worldwide.

What did Chris Hemsworth say about Thor: Love and Thunder?

One of the main criticisms levied at Thor: Love and Thunder is that its tone is far too comedic. Discussing this on the SmartLess podcast, via The Playlist, Hemsworth acknowledged that people were “violently offended” by how the movie presented its comedy.

“You do need to be careful,” he said. “When we made Ragnarok, it was quite a twist, with Taika’s [film]. And it was so fun. There was a huge appreciation for the shift. And then [with] Love And Thunder, it was kind of like a Monty Python sketch, and we took the piss probably a little much, and then there was some backlash. There was this real kind of, ‘Why is he a goofball and why is it like this?’ And, [audiences] violently offended and we were like, ‘Oh, we’re just having fun or trying to try something different.’”

Hemsworth is reprising his role as Thor in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, which will be released in United States theaters on December 18, 2026. That is being followed by a sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, that arrives in December 2027.

Thor: Love and Thunder, meanwhile, is available to watch on the Disney+ streaming service.
