Fans Call The Mandalorian & Grogu ‘Absolute Cinema’ as Martin Scorsese Joins Cast
Star Wars fans are buzzing after it was confirmed that legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese is lending his voice to The Mandalorian & Grogu. It is coming to theatres this summer. Fans quickly flooded social media, calling the cameo “absolute cinema,” a nod to Scorsese’s famous absolute cinema meme.
Martin Scorsese joins The Mandalorian and Grogu, and fans love it
According to the latest post shared by the official Star Wars page, the filmmaker-turned-voice performer steps into the role of an Ardennian shopkeeper who crosses paths with Mando while providing key intel. Fans are having fun with the news, sharing edited shots of Han Solo and “absolute cinema” captions, a playful nod to the famous moment when Scorsese criticized superhero films, and the meme that went viral afterwards.
Back in 2019, Scorsese told Empire that Marvel movies, while technically polished, did not qualify as “cinema,” comparing them more to theme park rides than emotionally driven storytelling. His appearance in a Star Wars project now creates irony that fans clearly love.
“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” Scorsese explained. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well-made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
Voice work is not new territory for him. Scorsese previously voiced Puff Daddy in Shark Tale, appearing alongside Will Smith. He proved he can inject personality into animated roles. Even though his Mandalorian part is small, viewers expect his Ardennian shopkeeper to leave a memorable mark in the galaxy far, far away.
The internet reaction has been loud and clear. Social media lit up with posts like, “This is pretty iconic, Martin Scorsese in Star Wars? Who saw that coming?”, and “Can’t believe we’ll get to see Scorsese credited for a Star Wars series!.”
The Mandalorian & Grogu is locked in for a theatrical rollout on May 22, 2026. The Star Wars film stars Pedro Pascal returning as Din Djarin, with Grogu by his side. New faces include Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White. On the other hand, Jon Favreau directs and produces the big-screen adventure for Lucasfilm and Disney.
