Robert Duvall, the Oscar-winning actor known for his performances in The Godfather films, Apocalypse Now and Tender Mercies, died Sunday night at his home in Middleburg, Virginia. He was 95. His death was announced by his wife, Luciana Duvall.
“Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time,” Luciana Duvall said in a Facebook post. “Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.”
Duvall won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Mac Sledge in Tender Mercies (1983) and received Oscar nominations for The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, The Great Santini, The Apostle, A Civil Action and The Judge. He portrayed Tom Hagen in The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974), Lt. Col. Kilgore in Apocalypse Now (1979), and Augustus “Gus” McCrae in the 1989 miniseries Lonesome Dove.
In her statement, Luciana Duvall said, “To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything.” A cause of death was not immediately available.
