Jon Favreau on Why The Mandalorian & Grogu Is a Must Watch in Theaters
Jon Favreau recently delved into why The Mandalorian and Grogu should be watched in theaters. Favreau has shared new insights into the upcoming film, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how it raises the stakes for longtime fans and theatergoers. He notably spoke at the Star Wars: Most Wanted event. There, the director outlined creative and technical upgrades that make this chapter stand out on the big screen.
How The Mandalorian and Grogu improves on the show
Jon Favreau stated that The Mandalorian and Grogu raises the bar for the Star Wars franchise in both technical and narrative elements.
“We gotta up our game now for the movie theater, and that means taller aspect ratios for IMAX,” Favreau said during the Star Wars: Most Wanted event as reported by ScreenRant. He added that the team focused on enhanced set construction and high-caliber visual effects. This has been done to create a film that warrants going to a theater. He said, “We want to take you on an adventure, and that adventure has to fill up the screen.”
Favreau emphasized the shift in viewing experience from streaming to cinema. “You’re not gonna be able to pause it, and you’re not gonna be able to eat the food out of your refrigerator.” The storytelling aims to fully engage the audience with an expanded scope and adventure.
The film follows Din Djarin and Grogu helping the New Republic fight Imperial warlords. Favreau confirmed that Pedro Pascal’s character continues to use the same model of ship, while Grogu has “leveled up.” He also claimed that Grogu is a cross between a Jedi and a Mandalorian.
Favreau and Dave Filoni wrote the screenplay. The cast features Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward and Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt. Steve Blum plays Zeb Orrelios, and Jonny Coyne appears as Imperial Warlord Janu Coin, with Pascal returning as Din Djarin.
The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters on May 22, 2026.
