How Interstellar Changed After Christopher Nolan Replaced Steven Spielberg

Christopher Nolan has revealed how Interstellar evolved from the version of the film that Steven Spielberg was going to make to the one audiences are familiar with. The movie hit theaters in 2014 and became both a critical and commercial success. It also established a legacy that continues to endure, with many regarding it as one of Nolan’s best films.

Nolan recently participated in a Q&A session with Timothée Chalamet, who asked him questions about Interstellar, ahead of an IMAX 70mm screening of the film. The screening took place at AMC Universal Citywalk IMAX in Los Angeles. During his discussion with the Marty Supreme star, Nolan offered insights into Interstellar’s evolution from Steven Spielberg’s version of the film into the film audiences recognize today.

The Inception director revealed that the film originated from a pitch from physicist Kip Thorne to Spielberg and Paramount. It was essentially “doing a science fiction movie about looking out into the greater universe with real science behind it,” according to Nolan.

He added that his brother, Jonathan, got the screenwriting gig for Interstellar while they were making The Dark Knight. He continued, “He worked on it for a lot of years. It had incredible ideas and moved through all these different iterations… But until Steven was ready to make it, whatever it is, it never quite got that momentum. Steven went off to do another film, so it became available.”

The English filmmaker further stated that he and Jonathan had discussed the film for years, including his “work” and “ambition” for the project. He recalled being excited after hearing about the project and being captivated by the first act. “I had been working on a time travel idea… things looking at time,” he continued. “I had half-baked projects that I hadn’t committed to.”

Nolan revealed that after Interstellar became available, he asked his brother if he could combine his ideas with the existing ideas for the film and tinker around with it. He added that his brother agreed, further stating, “He could tell the spirit of what I was trying to do was to get to what he was initially excited about it.”
