Steve Martin Names His ‘Favorite Comic Scene’ in 60-Year Career

Steve Martin recently shared the comic scene he likes from The Pink Panther in light of the celebration of its 20th anniversary on February 10. He explained that the movie was made with the intent of appealing to a younger audience.

Additionally, he revealed that a scene he particularly enjoys is when his character learns American English from a dialect coach to blend in with the environment of New York City. He practices saying “I would like to buy a hamburger,” a scene he regards as his favorite from the film.

Steve Martin talks about the ‘favorite comic scene’ he has ever done

In a conversation with PEOPLE, Martin revealed that the hamburger comic scene from The Pink Panther movie remains his favorite. He said, “We aimed our movie at a younger audience than the originals, and I’m proud that the movie has the favorite comic scene I’ve ever done: “I would like to buy a HAMMBERRRRGAU.”

In the scene, Martin, who plays Inspector Clouseau, gets a lead in New York. At the time, he believes that if he converses with a French accent locally, he might struggle to fit in the culture. Therefore, he takes lessons from a dialect coach to sound more American. He tries to master his accent as he practices to say the line, “I would like to buy a hamburger.”

Director Shawn Levy shared that people often mimic the scene when they meet him. Recalling the inception of the scene, he added, “That scene started with Steve Martin pitching me an idea over lunch one day.”

He continued, “It was, what if Clouseau had to go to a dialect coach? And the whole scene is maybe one single sentence repeated 50 times. In the most absurd and increasingly ridiculous ways.” Levy mentioned that he found Martin’s idea “juicy” and was confident it would work out well “with a performer like” him.
