Ryan Coogler Explains Why Black Panther 2 Is a Disney+ Streaming Hit
Acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler has shared that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s streaming performance on Disney+ surpassed one of Marvel Studios’ most popular movies of all time. This revelation comes after Coogler’s 2025 horror movie Sinners just recently made history by becoming the only film to ever receive 16 Oscar nominations.
What did Ryan Coogler say about Black Panther 2’s Disney+ success?
While opening up about the emotional production of Black Panther 2 during an interview with THR, Coogler confirmed that the 2022 sequel has been streamed more than 2018’s acclaimed Black Panther movie on Disney+. Due to Chadwick Boseman’s untimely passing in 2020, the director had to reframe his original vision for the sequel’s story around the titular hero’s death while dealing with the grief of losing Boseman.
“I learned that I was more resilient than I give myself credit for — I’ll say that was the biggest thing,” He said. “And that movie gets watched at home so much more than the other Panther did. I think about that: People may be watching when they want to feel something specific.”
Last December, Coogler confirmed that he’s already deep into the development of Black Panther 3. A recent report also suggested that the studio might be planning to start the new sequel’s production on June 15, 2026, in London, England. Besides Letitia Wright’s Shuri, Academy Award winner Denzel Washington might also make his MCU debut in Black Panther 3 after previously teasing that Coogler was writing a part for him in the film. Recent casting rumors also claimed that Snowfall star Damson Idris might be playing the next Black Panther. Even though the studio hasn’t confirmed anything yet, Idris was previously spotted accompanying Black Panther vet Angela Bassett at the Vogue World: Hollywood event, where the acclaimed actress was dressed as Queen Ramonda.
