Marvel’s Kevin Feige Explains Why Ryan Coogler’s Sinners Should Win Best Picture

Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, recently shared why Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners should win Best Picture.

What did Marvel’s Kevin Feige say about Sinners?

Feige is no stranger to Coogler’s directorial efforts. Feige produced Coogler’s two Marvel movies, 2018’s Black Panther and 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Feige earned a Best Picture nomination for producing Black Panther, the first superhero movie to receive that honor.

Coogler is back in the mix this awards season with Sinners, which received a record 16 Academy Award nominations. If it were up to Feige, Best Picture should go to Sinners, which is poised to become the second horror movie ever to win the Oscars‘ top prize.

“The music was incredibly meaningful to me, and I told Ryan that my jaw was on the floor. It should win best picture for that alone,” Feige told The Hollywood Reporter. “The Academy doesn’t always, in my opinion, recognize the movies that are most relevant for audiences today. But, boy, did they hit it with this one.”

In Sinners, Michael B. Jordan plays Smoke and Stack, twin brothers who return to the Mississippi Delta to start a juke joint. Opening night becomes the party of the year until the arrival of the Irish vampire Remmick (Jack O’Connell), forcing the twins and their remaining guests to fight for their lives.

Sinners also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, and Delroy Lindo.

Sinners is written and directed by Coogler, who produces alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. Released in April 2025, Sinners became a box office hit, grossing $368 million worldwide on an estimated budget between $90 million and $100 million.

Sinners is one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year. Coogler received Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

Coogler will eventually return to Marvel to direct Black Panther 3. However, Coogler is expected to finish work on his reboot of The X-Files before tackling another MCU film.
