Mark Ruffalo Reveals Crime He Committed for 13 Years While Promoting New Movie

While promoting his newest movie with fellow Marvel stars Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry, Academy Award nominee Mark Ruffalo opened up about the minor crime he had committed when he was younger. His revelation comes ahead of Crime 101‘s theatrical release on February 13, 2026, where he’ll be playing a detective tracking down Hemsworth’s jewel thief character.

What crime was Mark Ruffalo previously committing?

During a recent interview with IGN, Ruffalo admitted that he previously driven illegally in L.A. for 13 years with a suspended driver’s license. He managed to evade arrest because he tried his best to never break any laws, so that he wouldn’t get busted.

“I drove illegally in LA for like 13 years on a suspended driver’s license with a bench warrant out for my arrest,” Ruffalo shared. “But you wanna know something…I became the best driver in LA. I never broke a law because I was too afraid I’d get busted.”

Ruffalo revealed that meeting his wife, Sunrise Coigney, was the only way he was able to get himself out of that tricky situation.

“The only reason that I dug myself out of that hole is when I met my wife. She found out that I had a bench warrant and my license was suspended, and she broke up with me,” the acclaimed actor recalled. “And I was like, ‘I’ll fix it. I’ll fix it. No, no, no, no, you can’t break up with me because of that.’ And she’s like, ‘No, I need to be with someone who is serious about life, and you, you’re not even taking care of the fundamentals.'”

He continued, “So, I went in front of the judge, I was like, ‘I’m an actor, I’m really depressed.’ And he’s like, ‘Okay.’ And he, like, gave me pennies on the dollar. And I paid all of it back, you know. But I got myself out of trouble, and I kept my wife.”

Crime 101 is written and directed by Bart Layton, based on Don Winslow’s 2020 novella of the same name. The ensemble cast also includes Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Nick Nolte. In addition to leading the cast, Hemsworth is also serving as a producer, along with Layton. This marks Hemsworth and Ruffalo’s first time working together on a non-MCU project.
