Superman Star David Corenswet’s NFL Biopic Sets Release Date

Paramount Pictures has reportedly locked in the release date for David Corenswet‘s next movie, an untitled NFL biopic revolving around John Tuggle. The upcoming film marks the actor’s next major project following his positively received turn as Superman in James Gunn’s successful film of the same name.

Paramount Pictures has set the release date for David Corenswet’s John Tuggle movie. Colloquially referred to as Mr. Irrelevant, the film premieres on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026.

The upcoming film is based on the life and career of Tuggle. He was drafted by the New York Giants as the final pick of the 1983 NFL draft, a decision that greatly impacted the team. Due to being selected last, he was dubbed “Mr. Irrelevant.” This is a title reserved for players waived by the teams that drafted them before the regular season starts. However, there have been exceptions to this rule. They include Brock Purdy (San Francisco 49ers), Jacque MacKinnon (San Diego Chargers), Ryan Succop (Kansas City Chiefs), and Marty Moore (New England Patriots).

Following his selection by the Giants, he played for only one season (1983) and received the New York Giants Special Teams Player of the Year award. Tragically, his career was cut short by cancer, and he died of the disease on August 30, 1986, at 25.

Tuggle was previously the focus of ESPN’s 30 for 30 short film, “The Irrelevant Giant.”

The John Tuggle sports biopic is helmed by Jonathan Levine. The filmmaker is known for his work on films like Long Shot, 50/50, Warm Bodies, and The Night Before. In addition to directing the film, Levine is a co-producer alongside Gillian Bohrer. Meanwhile, Nick Santora, who co-wrote Punisher: War Zone and worked on shows like FUBAR and Reacher, wrote the screenplay.

In addition to Corenswet as John Tuggle, the film stars Michael Shannon as Bill Parcells, David Krumholtz, and Isabel May.

Besides the John Tuggle biopic, Corenswet also has the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, in the pipeline. The latter launches into theaters on July 9, 2027.
