Though other streaming platforms might have the leg up in quantity, Tubi has plenty of choices. Here are the best mystery series on Tubi.
What are the best mystery series on Tubi?
Though the streaming platform offers a wider selection in other genres, there are still mystery series for the sleuthing fans.
How to Get Away with Murder (2014)
We’ll watch Viola Davis in literally anything, anytime. Luckily, there’s a six-season series from Peter Nowalk and produced by Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Bridgerton) that gives us plenty of time with one of the greatest. Viola Davis (Oscar and Tony-winning actress) plays Annalise Keating, a law professor teaching a course called How to Get Away with Murder. Annalise also selects five of her brightest students to assist at her law firm, where she practices criminal defense. Before long, they all get tangled up in one high-stakes murder case.
Lie to Me (2009)
This crime drama stars Tim Roth as Dr. Cal Lightman, a brilliant deception expert who calls ’em exactly as he sees ’em. More specifically, his profession relies on analyzing body language, vocal tone, and other physical cues to determine whether people are lying. It’s a particularly useful skill set, and one he regularly puts to use while working with law enforcement to crack especially difficult cases.
Alongside his team at The Lightman Group — including psychologist Gillian Foster (played by Kelli Williams) — Lightman consults for law enforcement agencies, government bodies, and even private clients. The cases are all over the place, ranging from murders and kidnappings to terrorism and political scandals. And sometimes, revealing the truth isn’t always the best option. Though this sounds like it might be heavy material, Lie to Me is a fairly easy watch. It originally streamed on Fox in the late 2000’s, which should give you an idea of what kind of show we’re getting into.
American Gods (2017)
This series is a full mix of genres and forms, including mystery, but we also wanted to switch things up with a recommendation that isn’t a criminal procedural. The show, adapted from Neil Gaiman’s novel, ran from 2017 to 2021, which means there are a few seasons here to keep you busy for a while. In terms of plot, American Gods follows Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), a man recently released from prison who finds himself swept into a hidden war between old gods and new ones. After taking a job as a bodyguard for the mysterious and endlessly charismatic Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), Shadow is introduced to a world where ancient deities (figures pulled from Norse, African, Slavic, and other mythologies) are struggling to survive in a modern America that has largely forgotten them.
Opposing them are the so-called new gods, born from society’s obsession with media and globalization. As Shadow travels across the country, the series unfolds like a surrealist road trip. There’s a whole “whodunnit” structure at work here, too, which keeps us hooked the whole way through.
Hostages (2013)
Dr. Ellen Sanders (played by Toni Colette) is a respected surgeon whose life is turned upside down when her family is taken hostage the night before she’s scheduled to operate on the President of the United States. She’s given an ultimatum that’s simple and terrifying: kill the president on the operating table, or her family dies. We probably don’t need more than that to draw you in. Hostages only has one season, so expect a lot packed into 15 episodes.
The Following (2013)
Though this series isn’t perfect, it’s still solid and satisfies our need for the mystery-thriller genre. Kevin Bacon plays Ryan Hardy, a former agent who is called on by the FBI when Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), a notorious serial killer with an obsession for Edgar Allen Poe, escapes from prison. Hardy, having played a part in apprehending the killer years before, now becomes the target of Carroll’s large network of followers. So while Hardy is after Carroll, Carroll and his culty serial-killer groupies are after Hardy, too. It’s a wild time. Buckle up.
