Austin Butler to Play Lance Armstrong in Oscar Winner’s New Drama Movie
After playing the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in 2022’s Elvis movie, Academy Award nominee Austin Butler has finally found his next biopic in the form of an untitled Lance Armstrong movie.
Per Variety, Butler has officially signed on to play the disgraced athlete in the new drama movie from Conclave director Edward Berger. Once considered one of the greatest cyclists of all time, Armstrong lost his prestige in 2012 when it was proven that he used performance-enhancing drugs during the duration of his career. Because of this, he was stripped of all of his Tour de France titles and was ultimately banned from official bicycling events.
What do we know about Austin Butler’s Lance Armstrong movie?
The untitled Lance Armstrong movie will be directed by Berger, who’s best known for his work on 2022’s All Quiet on the Western Front and 2024’s Conclave. The latter won him an Academy Award for Best International Film. It will be produced by former Netflix executive Scott Stuber, who has secured Armstrong’s life rights. According to the outlet, there is currently a bidding war among major studios and streamers for the project.
King Richard scribe Zach Baylin has been tapped to pen the movie’s screenplay. Besides Stuber, the movie will also be produced by Nick Nesbit. This won’t be the first time that Armstrong’s story has been adapted for the big screen, after Stephen Frears previously directed the 2015 movie The Program with Ben Foster playing the former racing legend.
Butler was most recently seen in last year’s crime thriller Caught Stealing. At the moment, he is also attached to star in several high-profile movies, such as the upcoming crime drama Enemies with Jeremy Allen White; the Miami Vice reboot movie with Michael B. Jordan; racing drama American Speed with Tom Holland; and the rumored Heat sequel.
