Isabela Merced Stars in Horror Movie Based on Hit Video Game Franchise

A Superman star has been cast in The House of the Dead, an upcoming movie based on Sega‘s popular video game franchise.

What is known about The House of the Dead movie?

Per Deadline, Isabela Merced has been cast as the lead in The House of the Dead. Merced’s stock is rising rapidly, having recently appeared as Kay Harrison in Alien: Romulus, Dina in The Last of Us, and Hawkgirl in Superman.

The House of the Dead franchise dates back to 1997, with the release of the original video game. In the arcade shooter, players take on the role of AMS agents, a government agency that prevents conspiracies by organizations from threatening the world. In this case, the agents battle undead creatures created by a mad scientist.

The House of the Dead is considered a revolutionary game because of its depiction of zombies. Before the game, zombies were depicted as slow-moving creatures, with George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead serving as the blueprint. The Sega game gave the zombies the ability to run, a groundbreaking premise never seen before. The idea of fast zombies inspired 2004’s Dawn of the Dead and 2013’s World War Z.

Paul W.S. Anderson will write and direct The House of the Dead. Anderson has experience bringing video games to the big screen, having previously directed 1995’s Mortal Kombat and multiple Resident Evil movies.

Anderson will produce alongside his longtime collaborator, Jeremy Bolt. Additional producers include Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Dan Jevons. Merced and Timothy I. Stevenson are attached as executive producers.

The House of the Dead is viewed as a “top Sega priority,” with the hopes that it will kick off a franchise. Sega is currently reaping the benefits of its Sonic the Hedgehog movies, which have combined to gross over $1.2 billion worldwide.
