The Queen’s Gambit Fans Will Love New Netflix Movie
More than five years after the critical success of The Queen’s Gambit, Netflix is finally delivering another exciting chess story for fans who have been missing the acclaimed Anya Taylor-Joy miniseries.
As of today, Netflix subscribers can now stream the documentary movie Queen of Chess, which follows the life and career of chess prodigy Judit Polgár. At 15 years old, she became the youngest player to achieve the title of chess grandmaster at the time. The documentary centers around Polgár’s goal to defeat one of the greatest chess players of all time.
What do we know about Netflix’s Queen of Chess?
“In 1989, before Searching for Bobby Fischer and The Queen’s Gambit, a 12-year-old Hungarian prodigy named Judit Polgár embarked on a David-and-Goliath mission to become the top chess player of her generation, which meant going up against men who thought that women — nevermind young girls like her — could never be truly great at chess,” reads the documentary’s synopsis. “In particular, Judit had her eyes set on besting the top-ranked Garry Kasparov, whom some consider the greatest player of all time. What followed was a 13-year saga of thrilling wins, petulant opponents, dramatic showdowns, and surprising friendships as Judit charged toward her goal.”
The Queen of Chess documentary is directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy, with Mark Bailey and Keven McAlester writing the screenplay. The movie features in-depth interviews with Polgár, her family, Kasparov, and other professional chess players. It is produced by Bailey, McAlester, and Rory Kennedy. The creative team consists of cinematographer Imre Juhász, composers Camilo Forero & Chris Brocato, and editors Azin Samari & Jesse Overman. The film just had its world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
