How Magneto Destroys [Spoiler] in Avengers: Doomsday Possibly Revealed
A legendary Marvel actor offered new insight into one of Avengers: Doomsday’s most closely guarded moments during a recent television appearance. The star described how his powerful character, Magneto, unleashes a major act of destruction in the upcoming film, offering a rare glimpse into a pivotal scene while stopping short of revealing full story details.
Ian McKellen enacts a potential Magneto scene from Avengers: Doomsday
During his February 2026 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Ian McKellen confirmed a key plot detail from Avengers: Doomsday. “I don’t always understand the story of these movies that I’m in… but in this one, I don’t think I’m spoiling anything by saying that Magneto destroys New Jersey,” he said, adding, “I’m sorry about that, New Jersey. My fault.”
McKellen described the scene in detail, saying, “I’m standing up pretending to do that, and the wind is blowing in my hair, and I’m putting on a fierce look, and I’m trying to be magnetic. The director on the loudspeaker says, ‘Ian, look more furious.’ He then said, ‘Shout something.’ I said, ‘What do I shout?’ He said, ‘Shout the worst thing you could possibly think of.’ So I said, ‘Maago!’”
He had previously hinted at the same moment in a Jake’s Takes interview, recalling practical effects in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand before adding, “Though I did destroy New Jersey the other day. Oooh, I perhaps shouldn’t have said that…”
McKellen’s comments sparked widespread speculation that Avengers: Doomsday adapts 2009’s Ultimatum. In that storyline, Magneto responds to the deaths of his children by reversing Earth’s magnetic poles. The act unleashes global disasters, including a tidal wave that floods Manhattan and kills thousands. Although the comic targets New York, the scale and method of destruction closely resemble McKellen’s description of New Jersey’s fate.
In Ultimatum, Magneto seizes Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, and uses his magnetic powers to bypass its enchantment. He then turns it into a weapon of mass destruction. Marvel has not confirmed if the film adapts this story directly. However, teaser trailers for Doomsday hint at Sentinels and show the return of the Fox X-Men universe. These details suggest the film perhaps draws from multiverse arcs like Secret Wars and Time Runs Out.
Avengers: Doomsday premieres in December 2026.
