Man of Steel Villain To Lead Revival Film on Iconic Horror Franchise

General Zod is trading Kryptonian conquest for a mind-bending psychological horror. The intense actor who brought the villain to life in Man of Steel is now set to headline the modern revival of one of cinema’s most foundational horror tales.

Michael Shannon to lead Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders movie

The project, officially titled Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders, is a contemporary reimagining of the 1920 German Expressionist masterpiece The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Michael Shannon will star as the iconic, sinister title character. The film will be directed by John Erick Dowdle. He is known for tense thrillers like No Escape and As Above So Below, and he also penned the screenplay.

This casting continues a productive creative partnership. Shannon previously collaborated with John Erick and his brother, producer Drew Dowdle, on the Emmy-nominated mini-series, Waco. That established trust seems central to the new film’s vision.

“Having worked with Michael Shannon on multiple projects, my brother and I have seen firsthand the unnerving intensity he can bring to even the simplest moments,” said John Erick Dowdle. “The idea of seeing him play the horrifying Doctor Caligari became an obsession for us. The plot reintroduces the haunting figure of Caligari. He will be seen as a traveling mesmerist who controls a sleepwalker, leaving a wake of murder as he moves from town to town. The story centers on a young woman whose boyfriend vanishes. Then she becomes convinced the enigmatic doctor is responsible, but her suspicions fall on disbelieving ears.

The original The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, released in 1920, is widely regarded as the first true horror film. Basically, a defining work of German Expressionist cinema. Now, fans have to wait for the release date announcement of Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders.
