Upcoming Sony Comedy Movie Delayed, New Release Date Set

One of the major comedy movies on Sony’s 2026 slate has suffered a release date delay. The Breadwinner is comedian Nate Bargatze‘s debut feature as an actor. Bargatze also co-wrote the script with Dan Lagana and is co-producing the movie with Lagana and Jeremy Latcham. Eric Appel, who previously helmed the 2022 feature Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, is the film’s director.

The Breadwinner’s release date delayed

The Breadwinner will now release in US theaters on May 29, 2026, over two months after the initial release date of March 13. Some of the other movies that are also releasing on May 29 are Paramount Pictures’ horror film Passenger and Focus Features’ war film Pressure.

The cast of The Breadwinner includes Bargatze as Nate Wilcox and Mandy Moore as Nate’s wife Katie, alongside Colin Jost, Kumail Nanjiani, Will Forte, Zach Cherry, Kate Berlant, and Martin Herlihy. JoAnn Perritano, Michael Musgrave, and Tyler Zacharia serve as executive producers on the movie.

According to the movie’s official logline, “The Breadwinner is a family comedy that follows the misadventures of Nate Wilcox, whose wife Katie lands a once-in-a-lifetime deal on Shark Tank that takes her on a prolonged business trip – and now the lifelong breadwinner has to fend for his family as a first-time stay-at-home dad. With three young daughters and little experience handling their day-to-day needs, Nate finds out quickly that running the household is the toughest gig he’s ever had.”

A prominent name in the world of comedy today, Bargatze notably served as the host of the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2025 and won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 2026 for Your Friend, Nate Bargatze.

During a June 2025 interview with Deadline’s Comedy Means Business podcast, Bargatze said that the experience of making The Breadwinner had been “awesome.” He also stated that everybody had been “nice” to him and that he got an acting coach for the project.
