Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise Gets Bad News Ahead of Reboot

With Disney currently focusing on expanding the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise with a reboot, the filmmaker behind the original three installments has offered a definitive yet disappointing update regarding his return.

In a recent interview, Gore Verbinski said that while he believed the seafaring action-adventure franchise had more stories to tell, he had given it his all and that his time with the swashbuckler series was over.

Gore Verbinski on if he’ll return for another Pirates of the Caribbean movie

Verbinski spoke with ScreenRant to promote his new film, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. During the discussion, the Rango filmmaker shot down the prospect of returning to helm another Pirates of the Caribbean installment.

He said that he had given everything he could to the beloved series, adding that returning to work on something familiar wouldn’t give him the excitement he had working on the initial films, making the whole opportunity less appealing.

Nonetheless, Verbinski acknowledged the franchise’s potential for future stories. He also wished that newcomers would get the best experience.

“I just don’t have anything,” he shared. “I feel like I did three and, for me, it was a great opportunity to learn and to try something.” Verbinski continued, “I think we have to be at a place where the wheels are about to fall off. I think once you kind of know how to do something, it becomes less interesting or less dangerous. There’s just so little time and there are so many stories to tell.”

Previously, in June 2025, Pirates of the Caribbean franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer told ScreenRant that the writing process for the sixth film was underway. He stressed that while they “really want to make [the movie],” it was contingent on the right script. He affirmed that the new installment would be a reboot. However, he said it would include both new and returning characters.

Around this time, Orlando Bloom, who essayed Will Turner in the first three films, expressed interest in the original characters’ returns. He told This Morning that “it’d be great to get the band back together.”

Two months later, while speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Bruckheimer revealed Johnny Depp was open to reprising Jack Sparrow. He said, “If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it. It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know.”
