Meryl Streep To Play Award-Winning Singer in New Cameron Crowe Movie

Long-time record producer Clive Davis has finally confirmed Academy Award winner Meryl Streep‘s involvement in director Cameron Crowe‘s next biographical movie. This comes ahead of Streep’s long-awaited return as the iconic Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada 2, which just just released its first trailer.

Who is Meryl Streep playing in Cameron Crowe’s next movie?

Per Rolling Stone, during Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party, the record executive revealed that Streep will indeed be playing the legendary singer Joni Mitchell in Crowe’s untitled biopic about Mitchell’s life and career. Rumors about her casting were first revealed last August 2025, with Golden Globe winner Anya Taylor-Joy also reportedly set to play the younger version of the acclaimed singer.

Crowe has been developing the biopic with Mitchell for nearly five years now. During a previous appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the acclaimed filmmaker described the project as a “really personal” look at her life music.

“We’ve been working on it for about four years. We have regular meetings where I can ask her anything, and she speaks with her heart about all kinds of stuff. It’s a movie that will be not be from a distance . . . This is from her perspective, her life, looking out,” Crowe shared. “She’s kept all of her costumes, all of her clothes, all of her instruments. She’s even still the landlady of her famous house in Laurel Canyon. So this is a really personal, wonderful look at her life and music.”

Mitchell is considered one of the most influential singer-songwriters of her generation. She’s best known for many iconic hit songs such as “Both Sides, Now”, “Big Yellow Taxi”, and “Blue”. Yesterday, the 82-year-old legendary musician won her eleventh Grammy Award for Best Historical Album. Before that, the Grammys honored her with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.
