Wuthering Heights’ First Reactions Call Margot Robbie Movie ‘Scorching Hot’
Early reactions to Emerald Fennell’s latest directorial venture, Wuthering Heights, have surfaced ahead of the film’s February 13, 2026, theatrical release. They praise all the major aspects of the romantic drama, from the cinematography and production design, to the performances of the leads, Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. The film is an adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic English novel. It recently held its world premiere at Los Angeles’ TCL Chinese Theatre.
Margot Robbie & Jacob Elordi-led Wuthering Heights gets mostly positive early responses
Early reactions to Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi’s Wuthering Heights praise the two actors’ performances and on-screen chemistry. They also laud the film’s cinematography, costumes, and production design. Notably, one reviewer states that the film is remarkably different from the source material.
Jazz Tangcay of Variety showered the film with considerable praise on X (formerly Twitter). She labeled the story “a scorching hot and twisted tale,” noting that Robbie and Elordi’s chemistry was “a whole other level of HOT!” Tangcay also praised Emerald Fennell’s handling of the adaptation, stressing that only the English filmmaker “could take a classic, turn it on its head, make you fall completely in lust, and then utterly destroy your soul.”
Further, she called the film “an exquisite spectacle of craftsmanship” and marveled over the costumes, production design, and cinematography. “Obsessively in love with it,” she concluded.
Meredith Loftus of Collider wrote in her review, “Fall in love again and again with Emerald Fennell’s imagining of #WutheringHeights. From its gorgeous set design & costumes, striking cinematography, & bombastic music by Charli XCX, the film leans into the passion + obsession of Catherine & Heathcliff’s torrid love story.”
Buzzfeed UK’s Ada Enechi, who loved the film, said that it is not like the Wuthering Heights novel that school children will be familiar with, and that they would either hate the film or love it. “Potentially my favourite performance from Jacob Elordi,” she continued. “Definitely makes the top 3 for Margot but what made me stand up to attention was the score and cinematography – breathtaking. It’s passionate, it’s daring and explores a version of the classic that deserves our attention,” Enechi concluded.
Here are some more early positive reactions:
The film marks Fennell’s third feature directorial effort following Promising Young Woman and Saltburn. In addition to directing it, Fennell also wrote the screenplay.
Besides Robbie and Elordi, the film stars Hong Chau, Owen Cooper, and Ewan Mitchell, among others.
