Sydney Sweeney’s Split Fiction Movie Gets Exciting Release Date Update

Fans of the hit video game Split Fiction just got a major release date window update on its movie adaptation featuring Sydney Sweeney, straight from the source. Game director Josef Fares has shared new details on the project’s progress and his contact with its announced star.

Josef Fares reveals the status of Split Fiction’s movie adaptation

The cinematic adaptation of the popular cooperative game Split Fiction is moving forward with a major milestone. In a recent interview translated from Swedish with MovieZine, game director Josef Fares provided an exciting, if cautiously optimistic, update.

Fares confirmed that the initial screenplay for the Split Fiction movie has now been delivered. “I got the first version of the script today but you know, there’s so much talk in Hollywood. I usually say it like this, ‘I believe it when I see it’” (via Dexterto). If it begins production this year, then Split Fiction’s release date could be around 2027 or 2028. The script comes from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The duo brings experience from writing the Deadpool and Zombieland films.

Perhaps even more tantalizing for fans is Fares’ revelation that he has personally connected with the film’s headline star. “I’ve had a meeting with her and she seems super chill,” he said of Sydney Sweeney, adding that the actress is “hyped” for Split Fiction. Sweeney’s specific role in the film remains undisclosed.

This Split Fiction update offers a real-world look at the journey from console to cinema. The team announced the adaptation just a few weeks after the game’s massively successful March 2025 launch. Acclaimed director Jon M. Chu, of Wicked and In the Heights fame, will be directing.

The game follows two writers — one fantasy, one sci-fi — who become trapped in their own fictional worlds by a machine designed to steal ideas. The Split Fiction game adaptation continues to move forward, though no exact release date has been set.
