Jason Statham’s Shelter gets positive reviews and Rotten Tomatoes score

Jason Statham’s Shelter holds a 74% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 31 critic reviews.

Ric Roman Waugh directed the film, and Ward Parry wrote it. The film has a runtime of 1 hour and 47 minutes and falls under the action, mystery, and thriller genres.

Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter gave a Fresh rating, stating, “Shelter reliably provides plenty of the action that Statham fans crave, not to mention his trademark charisma and low-key underplaying that makes Charles Bronson look overly demonstrative.”

Jacob Oller from AV Club also marked it Fresh with a C+ grade, calling it “Waugh’s bargain-bin take on a Bourne-style supersoldier.” David Jenkins of Little White Lies issued a Rotten review, rating it 1/5 and said, “Statham’s impressive physicality does little to add much juice to a film that expends much of its energy cleaving tightly to tired formula.”

Linda Marric of HeyUGuys gave it 3/5, writing, “Shelter delivers exactly what you’re signed up for.” Pete Hammond from Deadline rated it Fresh, stating, “When you see Jason Statham starring in a one-word title you know exactly what kind of movie you are going to get, and his latest, Shelter, is right on brand.”

Jonathan Sim of ComingSoon described the film as “exactly the kind of movie you think it’s going to be.” He wrote, “Michael Mason (Statham) lives alone on a remote Scottish island” until he rescues a young girl from drowning, triggering the plot. Sim highlighted the emotional arc: “Their uneasy bond becomes the emotional spine of the film.”

The MI6 subplot introduces Bill Nighy as an intelligence official pushing a mass surveillance program. Sim noted that Shelter contains “surveillance-heavy sequences,” “gritty, physical” action, and “a nightclub sequence that’s chaotic, stylish, and undeniably fun.” He rated the film 6.5/10, noting its familiar structure and emotional undertones.
