Bruce Willis Health Update From Wife Is Heartwarming News
Bruce Willis‘ wife Emma Heming Willis has opened up about her husband, giving a new update on the actor who is dealing with frontotemporal dementia.
What is the latest Bruce Willis health update?
Speaking on The Unexpected Journey podcast, Willis revealed that the acting legend isn’t aware he has dementia, but is still able to recognize his family and “present” in his body.
“I think they think this is their normal,” Willis said (via Variety). “There is this term, this neurological condition, that comes with FTD and other types of dementia that’s called anosognosia, where your brain can’t identify what is happening to it. Where people think this might be denial, like where they don’t want to go to the doctor because ‘I’m fine.’ It’s actually… this is the anosognosia that comes into play… Bruce never tapped in. He never connected the dots that he had this disease. I’m really happy about that. I’m really happy he doesn’t know about it.
“He is still very much present in his body… when someone says to me, ‘Does Bruce still know who you are?’ Yes he does, because he doesn’t have Alzheimer’s he has FTD. He has a way with connecting with me, our children, that might not be the same as you would connect with your loved one but it’s still very beautiful and meaningful. It’s just different. You just learn how to adapt.”
In 2022, Willis announced that he would step away from the world of acting after being diagnosed with aphasia, a language disorder that affects the ability to communicate. In a 2023 update, Willis’ daughter Rumer announced that his diagnosis had progressed into frontotemporal dementia.
In 2023, Tallulah Willis, the daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, wrote an essay for Vogue detailing her family’s reaction to Willis’ diagnosis of dementia earlier this year, where she called the ongoing period for the family “the beginning of grief.” She noted that she and the rest of the family noticed that something wasn’t right with Willis “for a long time” but that it had been chalked up to Willis’ hearing damage that he suffered throughout his long career in the world of action films.
“I’ve known that something was wrong for a long time,” Tallulah wrote. “It started out with a kind of vague unresponsiveness, which the family chalked up to Hollywood hearing loss: ‘Speak up! “Die Hard” messed with Dad’s ears.’ Later that unresponsiveness broadened, and I sometimes took it personally.”
