Big-Budget Ryan Reynolds Cold War Movie Won’t Get Theatrical Release — Report

One of Ryan Reynolds‘ upcoming projects is a big-budget survival movie set during the Cold War. The latest report suggests Reynolds’ movie will not receive a theatrical release.

What is the latest update for Mayday with Ryan Reynolds?

According to Puck, a release date for Mayday “will be announced soon.” It will bypass theaters and go straight to streaming on Apple TV, likely in September. This comes despite some recent success by Apple in the theatrical space with event movies like F1.

In June 2023, Apple Original Films and Skydance announced Mayday, an action-adventure movie starring Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley wrote and directed Mayday, based on an original pitch from the duo.

Little is known about Mayday. It is a comedic survival movie, so it’s right up Reynolds’ alley of blending comedy with action. Reynolds is rumored to be playing a pilot who crash-lands in Soviet territory. Reynolds’ character must then evade capture and stay alive in the Russian wilderness.

Mayday’s producers include Reynolds, Goldstein, Daley, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Johnny Pariseau, and Patrick Gooing. Skydance’s Carin Sage will oversee the project.

Mayday has been sitting on the shelf for over a year. In June 2024, Goldstein posted on X that the movie had wrapped.

Reynolds spent most of 2025 promoting John Candy: I Like Me, a documentary about the legendary comedian. Reynolds produced the documentary, and Colin Hanks directed.

Next up on Reynolds’ slate is Animal Friends, a live-action animated comedy for Warner Bros. The movie hits theaters on June 5, 2026.

There is also speculation that Reynolds could reprise his role as Wade Wilson in Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters on December 18, 2026. If Deadpool does not show up in Doomsday, the next logical choice would be Avengers: Secret Wars, which opens one year later on December 17, 2027.
