Saw 11 Plot Details Teased by Franchise Co-Creator James Wan
After years on the sidelines, the mastermind behind the original Saw is returning to the franchise he helped birth. James Wan, who directed the 2004 classic, is now steering the future of Saw 11 under Blumhouse, promising a back-to-basics approach that prioritizes psychological terror.
James Wan hints at what to expect in Saw 11
Wan has offered the first substantial teases for the Saw 11 plot. His vision is a deliberate back-to-basics mission. “One of the things I really want to do with this next Saw is make it scary again,” Wan shared with Letterboxd’s Journal. “I want to make a scary Saw—not just gory, but psychologically scarring, like what Leigh [Whannell] and I did in the first movie.”
This means a renewed pivot to the core philosophy of John Kramer, the original Jigsaw. Wan and co-creator Leigh Whannell aim to recapture the spirit of the first film, revisiting the killer’s twisted moral code. “He goes after people who don’t appreciate their lives,” Wan explained. “If you’re a scumbag, but you appreciate your life, he doesn’t see you as someone who’s wasting your life, so I want to go back to what we touched on in the first movie.”
While Wan intends to honor the elements fans love, he acknowledges the need for innovation in Saw 11’s plot. “We need to do something different in order to reach out to a new generation that didn’t grow up with it,” he said. His position of being largely removed from the franchise’s later sequels gives him what he calls “the freshest outlook.”
James Wan’s reflections underscore how the original Saw was a product of its time, both in its scrappy production and its cultural resonance. He recalled the film’s DIY ethos, born from a desire to emulate indie heroes like Kevin Smith and Robert Rodriguez. The now-iconic grimy aesthetic, he noted, was a necessity that became a strength. “Quick cuts, weird camerawork, and dim lighting all helped to hide the spit and glue that held everything together.”
With Saw 11, James Wan doesn’t seem to be just producing another sequel, but also going back to the olden days for the newer generation.
