James Gunn Teases Beloved Justice League Member Is Coming to the DCU
James Gunn is teasing a major DC character’s arrival in the DCU.
Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU began in December 2024 with the animated Creature Commandos series. That was followed by Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 in 2025, while Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface are all being released this year.
What is the new James Gunn DCU tease?
On Twitter, Gunn posted images that heavily feature some Chocos-inspired set design. While the only thing that Gunn said in the posts was “Set design in Chocos. #Superman,” this is clearly a nod to Martian Manhunter, as he is notably quite fond of the snack.
Given the elaborate production design, it seems like the location seen in the images will be used in some forthcoming DCU project, though this has not been officially confirmed at this time. Many fans online are taking this as a sign to believe that Martian Manhunter will then be making his DCU debut in the near future.
The most obvious guess as to when this might happen would be Man of Tomorrow, Gunn’s Superman follow-up movie, as that is supposed to start filming this Spring.
Having said that, there’s no guarantee that Martian Manhunter will be in Man of Tomorrow. Even if the Chocos set is used in the DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures movie, it could just be a tease acknowledging the character exists and that he’ll show up in another project at another point in time.
Created by Joseph Samaachson and Joe Certa, Martian Manhunter/J’onn J’onzz first debuted in DC Comics in 1955’s Detective Comics #225. A founding member of the Justice League, J’onn comes from Mars and has the ability to shapeshift, among other abilities. He briefly appeared in the DCEU, where he was portrayed by Harry Lennix, while he’s also been in shows like Justice League Unlimited, Smallville, and more.
Man of Tomorrow arrives on July 9, 2027.
