Wanted 2 Could Happen Only on 1 Condition After 18 Years

Nearly two decades after Wanted first arrived in theaters, talk of a sequel has resurfaced. This follows new comments from director Timur Bekmambetov. The filmmaker has suggested that Wanted 2 is not entirely off the table. However, the sequel’s future depends on a specific condition.

Wanted director on how part 2 could happen

Speculation about Wanted 2 has resurfaced after director Timur Bekmambetov shared new details about what might finally move the long stalled project forward. The 2008 action thriller, headlined by Angelina Jolie alongside James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman, has remained without a sequel for more than a decade, despite its strong commercial performance.

Bekmambetov recently addressed the project while promoting his new release Mercy. He explained that the future of several of his past franchises may depend on how the 2026 sci-fi film performs.

He said Mercy’s performance “will help me make more interesting movies.” In an interview with ScreenRant, Bekmambetov said, “I have an idea of what it is, but it depends a lot [on] the success of Mercy, honestly. All these movies could be continued, but Mercy is crucial. It’s at the mercy of Mercy.”

According to the director, he already has a concept for a second installment, describing it as “unbelievable.” However, he is keeping the story under wraps until the project shows real signs of moving forward. Bekmambetov also suggested that Chris Pratt, who appeared in a supporting role in the original movie, could feature more prominently in a sequel if it is approved.

He went on to praise Jolie, calling her “an unbelievable human being.” The director added that he “really want[s] to see her onscreen in action [again].”

Released in 2008, Wanted holds a 72 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film follows Wesley Gibson, an office worker who discovers that his father was part of a secret group of assassins known as the Fraternity. He is pulled into their world and trained to hunt down his father’s killer.

As of now, Wanted’s sequel has not been officially approved. However, Bekmambetov’s comments indicate that discussions are still ongoing.
