Production has officially begun on the next chapter of a well-known dragon story. Key cast and crew returned to set as cameras started rolling on the highly anticipated sequel to the popular franchise.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 begins filming
Filming for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 officially began on January 27, 2026.
Director and writer Dean DeBlois marked the first day of principal photography by posting, “Back in the saddle! Day 1 of principal photography on HTTYD2! The adventure begins……..” on X (@HTTYDragon). The post included a behind-the-scenes image of DeBlois and revealed a new version of the movie’s logo, now featuring a red color scheme.
The live-action sequel continues from the 2025 release of the first film. Mason Thames played Hiccup, Nico Parker portrayed Astrid, Gerard Butler appeared as Stoick, and Nick Frost took on the role of Gobber. The first installment grossed $636.6 million worldwide and earned a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Universal confirmed the sequel before the first film premiered and scheduled its theatrical release for June 11, 2027.
Thames, Parker, Butler, and Frost return to reprise their roles. Julian Dennison returns as Fishlegs, Bronwyn James as Ruffnut, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, and Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut. Cate Blanchett joins the cast as Valka after voicing the character in the animated version.
Ólafur Darri Ólafsson joins the cast as Drago, the primary antagonist. He previously voiced Ragnar the Rock in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. The film also introduces a new character named Eret, though producers have not yet announced the actor for this role. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel produce the sequel.
The film adapts the plot of the 2014 animated How to Train Your Dragon 2. The production aims to expand on the commercial and audience success of the previous live-action adaptation while continuing the established story arc.
