Thor 3 & 4 Were for MCU Franchise’s ‘Greater Good,’ Says Director
Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi says his MCU movies were for the “greater good” of the franchise.
Waititi directed both Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, the first of which was released in 2017 while the latter followed in 2022. Both films have a much more humorous tone when compared to the first two movies in the franchise, 2011’s Thor and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World.
Thor: Ragnarok received mostly positive reviews from critics and Marvel fans alike, while Thor: Love and Thunder was not received as well. The Thor character is played by Chris Hemsworth, who will soon return in Avengers: Doomsday.
What did Taika Waititi say about his Thor movies?
Speaking with Variety, Waititi addressed the work he did on the Thor franchise, while he also said he’s excited to see what the Russo Brothers do with the character next.
“Thor was around before me,” he explained. “The stuff that Chris and I did and how we shaped him into that new version… that was for the greater good of the franchise as a whole. I can’t wait to see these ‘Avengers’ movies. I was just watching ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ two weeks ago. They’re so good. I’m good friends with the Russos and will love to see what they’re doing.”
Official plot details for Avengers: Doomsday and the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, remain under wraps at this time, meaning it’s hard to say how large a role Hemsworth will ultimately have in the forthcoming event movies. Having said that, the second Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailer that Marvel Studios released was all about the God of Thunder, meaning it seems safe to assume he won’t be completely sidelined.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in United States theaters on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars then follows on December 17, 2027.
