Star Wars: Taika Waititi Gives Intriguing Update on New Movie

Lucasfilm’s untitled Star Wars movie from Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has finally received a new update, teasing the filmmaker’s vision for the story. This comes more than five years after the project was first announced.

What did Taika Waititi say about his Star Wars movie?

During a recent interview with Variety, Waititi has opened up about his long-in-development Star Wars movie, revealing that he wants to deliver something a bit more different from the franchise’s existing slate. However, he also wants to bring back some of the magic from the original Star Wars films, where the story can be fun and serious at the same time.

“I’m just trying to go back and harness a little bit more of the fun from the original films, which is what I remember [from] them,” Waititi explained. “The stakes are very high, and there’s serious things going on, but there’s also a lot of fun to be had in those films. That’s what I was trying to bring back. I was trying to work in a world that was a little bit separate to that because they’ve got so many things going on within that space. For me to do something there, it would need to be a little different and a little bit more its own thing.”

In July of 2025, a report suggested that the untitled project might have been given the working title of Cosmic Doom and would reportedly be made under the production name of Ghost Truck 6. The Oscar-winning filmmaker will be directing from a screenplay written by Oscar-nominated scribe Tony McNamara. Former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently described Waititi’s latest script as “hilarious and great.” At the moment, further details about its plot and characters are still under wraps.
